Thom Browne was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA, where he grew up. He graduated the University of Notre Dame with the degree of Economics, even though he loved fashion design from his young ages.
After trying to do acting in Los Angeles, Thom went to New York to work as a salesman in the showroom of Giorgio Armani. There he was mentioned by one of the Polo Ralph Lauren brands, Club Monaco, and was made its Team Lead for Creative Development. After several years of being employed at Club Monaco, including working together with Ralph Lauren, the designer decided to launch his own label.
In 2006 Brooks Brothers agreed Thom Browne to be a guest designer for an exclusive high-end women‘s and men’s collection, Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers. The collection became extremely successful and Brooks Brothers decided for a long-term partnership with Browne.
Another winning partnership appeared in 2008. Moncler persuaded Thom to design Moncler Gamme Bleu, their men’s top line, which was presented at Milan Fashion Week.
During his career Thom received a number of prestigious awards, including CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year Award, Cooper Hewitt National Design Award, GQ Designer of the Year and many others.
In 2018 Ermenegildo Zegna has bought 85 % of Tom Browne brand for around half a billion dollars. Thom remained as the only other shareholder with 15 % of the shares and continued to be the Chief Creative Officer of the company.
